The 2016 collapse of Hanjin Shipping (and its subsequent bankruptcy in 2017) remains the lowest point in recent years for liner shipping. The financial fall exposed the fundamental weakness of the industry, namely rising costs and over supply which was driven by the previous decade’s carrier fleet expansion. The shipping line industry now appears to have settled into three principal space sharing pacts: The Ocean Alliance, THE Alliance and the 2M Alliance. Together these three alliances will account for around 90% of capacity on major routes. The expectation is that these carriers can truly implement a disciplined capacity pricing strategy and to deliver cost savings.
The TOC Americas Conference and Exhibition (13 – 15 November, Panama) will once again assemble the region’s key shipping lines and will look to assess the full effect of the years of market consolidation. This new world order must now look to meet the demand of the modern-day consumer where ecommerce is transforming how transactions and trades are done domestically and cross borders and improve its performance whilst balancing controlling and disciplining its investments and costs.
The region’s leading shipping lines will be represented at TOC Americas with Lars Oestergaard Nielsen, President – Latin America & Caribbean, Maersk Line and Howard Finkel, EVP, COSCO Container Lines both confirmed to speak already.
Key talking points for shipping line attendees at the TOC Americas Conference will include:
2-track conference programme: Container Supply Chain (which includes a session on Cold Chain) and TECH TOC – Terminal Operations (which includes a session on Bulk)
Technical Tour: Details to be announced soon
Comprehensive networking programme: Details to be announced soon
The TOC Americas Conference App: Participants at the conference will benefit from a bespoke conference app which allows attendees to put questions directly
to panels (anonymously if preferred) as well as create bespoke agendas and meeting lists of exhibitors.
The TOC Americas port technology exhibition will feature suppliers from across the globe including Camco Technologies, Phoenix Terminal Solutions,
Terberg Tractors Americas, ABB, Liebherr and Prysmian.
